Sports this Week:

  • This week the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, a feat that was so incredible it got Brandon to let me talk about sports for an entire episode of this podcast.
  • What is it about sports that draws us in?  Why to so many feel so much for theses games we watch? And is there anything to be gained from it?

Sometimes it’s better to lose:

  • Our surrender of self to a fanbase means we feel personal pride when a team does well and also stabbing pain with a crushing defeat.  But at the end of the day, this roller coaster of emotions can in a small way, help us to deal with some of these emotions when they affect us in the real world, even when there isn’t a ref to blame.

How do films about sports play on these emotions?

  • Most of the classic sports films do it, they end that third act with the “big game” that will bring the team that we have grown to know throughout the film a chance at the championship, or whatever.
  • But unlike sports in the real world that rely of an unscripted result and the talents of live television production crews, sports films can inflate the drama and emotion with cinematography, editing and music.
  • What sport films have done it best?  And are the best based on the retelling of a true sports story?
