Ep 90 – Unmasking Horror: The Science of Scares

ep90

Some could consider this our Halloween episode! Some others might consider it episode one of our relaunched show… either way, this is pretty scary ground for us.

Topic: Unmasking Horror; the science behind why we watch scary films.

Article for topic: The Critique of Pure Horror by Jason Zinoman for The New York Times

Show Notes

Why do people watch Horror films?

Horror studies, the scholastic approach to these films.

Repressed femininity, homosexuality or family issues.

  • Do Horror films tap into parts of our subconscious and allow us to expose aspects of ourselves that we repress?
  • How common do you feel these elements are and are they usually intentional, or a byproduct?

Is it more about “the ride?” The visceral experience like riding a roller coaster?

  • Do the pacing and up/down thrills of experiencing a film feed more for the adrenaline junkie than the scholar?
  • How do the pacing, camera work and music all work together to improve that effect.

Gore Factor. How do the extensive uses of blood and gore tap into an element of our psyche?

  • “Perverse sublime”
  • The safe distance of the screen
